Dysphagia after a stroke

Individuals who experience strokes are advised to go for physiotherapy in Abu Dhabi. An individual who ends up being paralyzed partially or entirely would need to work with a speech and language pathologist(SLP) who specializes in swallowing treatments in Abu Dhabi

Convenience for patients: Strokes can occur to individuals of all ages. The patient would not want to travel a lot when scheduled for a session with a physiotherapist and speech pathologist respectively. Good clinics are those that have a team of physiotherapist and speech pathologist in one place although in different departments when their job designations are taken into consideration.

Understanding the causes of strokes: Doctors of different backgrounds try their best in making people aware of having healthy lifestyles. People who are into unhealthy habits do not realize that they could end up having a stroke. Strokes are caused by high blood pressures, diabetes and heart diseases. Ischemia and hemorrhage are common causes of strokes. Ischemia is when there is lack of blood circulation and hemorrhage is when there is a blood clot in the brain, these two are caused when individuals are too selective regarding their diets. Once a stroke occurs, the individual gets paralyzed and this can negatively affect their ability to swallow.

Role of a physiotherapist: It is not easy for a physiotherapist to work with a stroke patient whose spine has been paralyzed. Even the best physiotherapists cannot miraculously restore the physical well being of a stroke patient. The least they can do is to strengthen the back to the best of their ability so there are signs of partial mobility. A functional spine is crucial for the patient to swallow. Even the slightest improvement of the spine can regain the patient’s ability to swallow.

Contribution of speech and language pathologist(SLP): An SLP would conduct a clinical examination of swallowing known as “bedside examination”. This is a screening process to study the functioning of the swallowing mechanism and observing the way the individual swallows food of different textures. Upon  conclusion of the examination results, the goal of an SLP is to improve the food flow so that the patient can receive sufficient oral nutrition and hydration to survive. SLPs use different treatments for swallowing and these are known as compensatory strategies, sensory stimulation techniques, swallowing maneuvers and direct therapy exercise.
